TACKLING FREQUENT INSTALLATION CHALLENGES WITH BABY GATES
CRUCIAL INSTALLATION DISCLAIMER
These installations require a specific level of expertise; attempting this task without a professional's assistance may lead to risks and unforeseen expenses.
By reading this article, you acknowledge that you have reviewed and accepted the terms and conditions specified here: Website Terms & Conditions.
The scenarios outlined below highlight various challenges I have encountered during installations. These may resonate with your own experiences and offer practical solutions.
INSTALLATION CHALLENGE 1: DEALING WITH UNEVEN SURFACES
ADDRESSING THE CHALLENGE OF UNEVEN SURFACES

-
- Measure the widest point at the top to determine the required size for the gate and any necessary extensions. (CLICK HERE FOR MEASURING GUIDELINES).
- Once you have the gates/extensions, use an angle grinder fitted with a metal/aluminium disc to cut the gate accurately, following the measurements provided in the reference images above.
- Remove the plastic component from the section you intend to cut and insert it into the newly cut part of the gate to ensure proper fitting of the tension knob.
- This process will become clearer once you have the gate in your possession.
INSTALLATION CHALLENGE 2: MOUNTING ON A SKEW WALL
FINDING SOLUTIONS FOR INSTALLING ON A SKEW WALL

STEPS TO FOLLOW:
-
- Ensure that the gate/extensions are already prepared for installation.
- Use Pratley Putty Quickset to fill any gaps, creating a level surface on the wall.
- Wait for the Putty to cure thoroughly BEFORE tightening the tension knobs to securely attach the gate using pressure.
- Do not rely on the gate for safety until all procedures are complete and the gate has been tested for stability.
INSTALLATION CHALLENGE 3: MOUNTING BABY GATES OUTDOORS
ADDRESSING THE CHALLENGES OF OUTDOOR BABY GATE INSTALLATION
While installing baby gates outdoors can be a practical and economical solution, it may also void the warranty on these products.

I recommend that outdoor baby gate installations be regarded as a temporary and cost-effective solution. This could potentially void your warranty on the gates.
-
- Baby gates are specifically engineered for indoor use and are not suitable for outdoor applications due to the risk of damage from harsh weather conditions.
- This limitation is explicitly stated in the warranty documentation accompanying the product.
- Failure to adhere to warranty conditions will lead to the loss of warranty coverage.
For a more permanent solution, consider employing a contractor who specialises in security or latch gates. Although this may incur higher costs, it is the most effective approach.
PREPARING THE BABY GATE AND EXTENSIONS FOR OUTDOOR USE:
Disclaimer: None of these measures ensure complete rust protection; however, they are intended to extend the lifespan of the gate under South African climatic conditions.
Regular treatment every 1-2 months can significantly decrease the risk of rust.
To reduce rust and moisture build-up, adhere to the following guidelines:
-
- Before installation, treat the baby gate, extensions, and mounting kit, ensuring to cover surface areas at the base as well.
- Drill holes at the bottom of the gate using an 8mm steel drill bit. This allows water to drain and prevents rust from forming inside the hollow gate, where moisture may accumulate at joints, connectors, and tension knobs. The holes will provide ventilation to avert moisture build-up.
- Apply a light coating of Rustoleum Painters Touch 2X Ultra Cover – Satin Clear 340g, available at takealot.com, to the baby gate, extensions, and mounting kit.
- Allow to dry completely (approximately 2 hours), then apply a second coat.
For existing rust:
-
- Spray the affected areas with Rust-Oleum Rust Reformer 291g, following the product guidelines.
- Refer to the product description on takealot.com; you may need to obtain mineral spirits to clean any overspray from non-rusted areas.
- The rust reformer will convert rust to a black colour, which should then be coated with Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Enamel Gloss White 340g, available on takealot.com.
